Why Functional Nutrition

Why Functional Nutrition

A Personalized Path to Healing

Functional nutrition is a personalized, evidence-informed approach to nutrition care. It considers your health history, symptoms, food patterns, lifestyle, medical care, and relevant laboratory information to identify practical strategies that support your goals.

When appropriate, targeted testing may help clarify nutrition-related concerns.

Recommendations are always individualized and may include food-first strategies, lifestyle support, review of existing labs, and supplement guidance when clinically appropriate.

Why - Oncology 2.JPG

For individuals navigating cancer, the body is under stress—physically, emotionally, and metabolically. Functional nutrition offers supportive care that focuses on nourishment, reducing inflammation, and enhancing resilience during and after treatment.

Through careful assessment and functional testing, we can explore how well the body is coping—from digestion and detoxification to inflammation and immune health. This helps us guide nutrition strategies that support healing, energy, and recovery—gently and with care.

Your reproductive health is intricately linked to nutrient reserves, hormone signaling, gut balance, and stress response. Whether you’re preparing for pregnancy or recovering after birth, functional nutrition allows us to assess your unique biochemistry and create a plan that supports hormonal harmony and deep replenishment.

Functional testing may point us toward areas like nutrient depletion, blood sugar regulation, or adrenal fatigue that could affect fertility or postpartum recovery. Using this insight, we can gently re-align the body’s natural rhythms with personalized food and supplement strategies.

Why - Chronic Disease .JPG

Autoimmunity, metabolic dysfunction, long COVID, and other chronic issues are rarely the result of a single cause. They often involve disruptions in the body’s communication systems—like inflammation, impaired detox, microbiome imbalance, or mitochondrial stress.

Functional nutrition helps identify these deeper patterns. By using lab insights alongside your story and symptoms, we can tailor a plan that supports healing at the source—not just covering up discomfort. Over time, this process strengthens your resilience and helps you feel more like yourself again.

Welcome to Dietbalance

At Dietbalance, we believe true health is about more than just managing symptoms—it’s about nourishing the whole person. Founded by Michelle Lewis, MS, RDN, IFNCP, CLC, our telehealth practice blends clinical nutrition with functional and integrative approaches to help individuals and families regain health and thrive with confidence.

Michelle is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist licensed in both Florida and Hawai‘i, and she works virtually with clients across the U.S., in accordance with state licensure laws. She splits her time between the mountains of Colorado and the island of O‘ahu, bringing a grounded, multicultural perspective to her work.

With over two decades of experience as a clinical practitioner, Michelle has worked closely with individuals and families across the lifespan—offering compassionate, evidence-informed care in both private practice and research settings. She has supported families through breastfeeding difficulties, maternal and infant nutrition concerns, chronic disease management, and cancer recovery. Her integrative approach combines advanced lab interpretation, functional nutrition strategies, and client-centered counseling to address root causes and promote lasting wellness. She also brings clinical insight into research, having guided participants through intensive dietary interventions and randomized controlled trials. She co-authored a peer-reviewed study protocol for The Healthy Diet and Lifestyle Study 2 (HDLS2), a trial exploring the effects of intermittent and continuous energy restriction on visceral fat. She brings the same meticulous care and client-centered focus from her research into every telehealth session.

Michelle holds advanced certification as an Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified Practitioner (IFNCP) and is also a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), allowing her to offer specialized care for maternal and infant health. Her approach blends evidence-based strategies with functional tools to uncover and address the root causes of imbalance.

Her passion for food runs deep. Whether she’s experimenting in the kitchen with new healthy recipes or hiking a trail in search of fresh inspiration, Michelle brings joy, curiosity, and compassion into everything she does. She believes that food should be healing, delicious, and empowering—and that wellness is a journey that includes the body, mind, and spirit.

At Dietbalance, your story matters. With warmth, clinical skill, and thoughtful care, Michelle is here to support you on your path to better health.
